I suspect some GM transmission designer was wasted when creating one particular FWD transaxle, and if memory serves me correct the Cavs have it. In order to check the fluid there is a bolt on the side, kind of under the master cylinder. With the motor running, the transmission at proper operating temp, in park, on a level surface, remove the fluid level check plug. if something comes out, you're OK. If nothing comes out, but the fluid is less than 1/4 inch below hole, you're OK. (use your finger to see if you can feel the ATF) You mention cap, no stick - is it a red cap a little larger than a golf ball? That's the fill hole, if you need it.

The automatic transmission fluid level dipstick is most likely in the back of the engine bay (closest to the windshield) and the top of it is either metal or red plastic. Remember to have the car started, and running (IN PARK!) while checking the AT Fluid level to get an accurate reading.

To check the fluid on this tranny you have to start the car and raise the car, on the right side near the axle there is a 11 mm bolt you have to take out if fluid drips out your good on the fluid, if not just add fluid until it starts coming out.

Some GM automatic equipped vehicles have a sealed transmission with no dip stick. Look in your owner's manual or call a GM dealer to be sure.
