You work to change the things you don't like about yourself and learn to live with the things you can't.
You develop more interests and become better educated and more aware of the beauty around you thereby becoming a more interesting person who can converse on multiple topics (movies, literature, politics, world events, art, sports).
You stop worrying about what other people think of you.
You find a way to become a more caring person.
You deal with issues that make you feel "less than" in the first place (childhood, early romance issues, etc.)
You admit your mistakes and try not to make the same ones again.
Does that help for starters? I hope so. Good luck.

Self-confidence is the feeling that you are capable of accomplishing something. You believe in your ability, so this helps you take on difficult tasks.
Self-confidence is earned. The good news is that there are things you CAN do. The other news is that you really do have to earn it, and it will take a while.
The idea is to give yourself full credit for the positive things you accomplish. Amazingly, not everybody does that! But you can choose to do so, and I recommend it. In fact, start with the things you've already achieved, no matter how great or small. "I saved $225 to buy a pro-style tennis racket." Whatever! You did it, so give yourself credit. I recommend you make a list of all this stuff, and check it off as you affirm each accomplishment.
Second, keep working on building this "list." Try things! Say to yourself, "I can do this. I've done difficult things before, and I can learn as I go. I can do this." Then jump in and bring all your inner strength to the task, until it's done.
I once built a massive two-level backyard deck with steps, rails and seating. I had never built anything out of wood before! But I figured if I ask advice, read up on it and think through a plan, I could get the materials, take it one step at a time and get it done. That deck is great, and it still stands today!
You'll be surprised what you can do! Just give yourself credit and believe in your abilities and inner strength.

I overcame pretty serious shyness when I realized it just wasn't working for me. It made my life harder and my life was busy enough.
Once I realized that there was a practical reason not to be shy (which is similar to lacking confidence, I think), it was easier for me to take steps to get beyond it. I just began speaking up and asserting myself.
I'm still shy inside, but I've learned to compensate and no one who knows me now thinks I'm shy at all.
I guess it's a matter of thinking that lacking cofidence is holding you back, so you concentrate on taking steps to make your life easier, not fixing a problem. It's a mental game. It's easier to make something more convenient than it is to work on a problem. If that makes sense at all. (worked for me)

You don't need to, that is the thing. God created you and you are awesome, just as you are. Also, to know that God will never stop loving you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you should give you all the confidence in the world.

Take a new interest something that involves other people. Take up writing you would be surprised who you will meet and they in turn make you feel that you are great.
