I am familiar with them, I have seen them before at my previous houses. But this is the first spring season for me in the house I am living in and they are absolutely everywhere. They stay right out side the house and they are all over the yard. I want to know if anyone knows any possible ways to rid them from the vicinity of our home. Thanks for the answers.

Crane flies resemble giant mosquitos and can be very damaging to lawns. Their larvae eat decaying plants, dead leaves, fungi, or the roots of many plants.

Here are 3 possible natural remedies to get rid of Crane Flies;

1) Spraying a Neem-based pesticide (considered naturally-derived and organic) to the soil to control the grubs/larvae. Neem (also known as Azadirachtin) is sold under many names (e.g.: "Bonide Bon-Neem" or "Green Light Neem Concentrate") at some nurseries and hardware stores. You can spray it onto the soil and water it in to disrupt the growth cycle of the larvae. You can read more about Neem visiting this site;

2) Applying beneficial nematodes (preferably Steinernema feltiae) onto the soil/lawn. The nematodes will seek out the larvae and release a bacteria which will eventually kill them. After infecting the larvae, they will continue to seek others and kill them also.

The nematodes are shipped in refrigerated units and should be sprayed onto the soil soon after you receive them. I've used them in the past and they do a very good job in controlling crane-fly larvae. (FYI: These nematodes DO NOT attack any plants or animals)

Here are a couple of sites where you can purchase these nematodes; http://www.extremelygreen.com/nematodeguide.cfm

3) Since Crane Flies are attracted to light, I'd suggest you purchase a "Bug Light" or "Bug Zapper" and hang it in your backyard. They're very effective in controlling other flying insects as well.

Hope this information was useful and you'll control these pesky and damaging insects. GOOD LUCK
