Best thing to do is hire a professional. But if you dont want to pay for that, you need to get to some wooden part of your house. If the wood easily flakes away and you see holes all in it you are in serious trouble and need to call someone right away.

- Sometimes a swarm can appear inside your home, the ones that fly. Termites have four equal sized wings, and they have a head and long abdomen. While flying ants have bigger wings in the front, smaller in the back. Their bodies have three parts: head, thorax and abdomen.
- Crawl spaces may have mud tunnels.
- Poke the wood near the foundation with an ice pick or screw driver. If its soft, pick it away and look for tunnels, and you might even see the white workers.
- Painted wood will rustle when touched, and the tunnels may be right underneath this surface.
=== But you really should have a professional come out. Every home can have unique features I couldn't possibly address here. Just because they inspect, doesn't mean you have to use their firm for the treatment.

When we had them I saw this stuff in the window sill that looked like sawdust mixed with little black specks, which was actually termite poop. Look around all the windows and along the baseboards. Or call a termite inspector.
