You could do something on a local level to make it interesting - your local humane society, school security, what laws are in your town to keep kids & teens safe, local organizations where students can volunteer - ie habitat for humanity, or you could do something on underage drinking, drunk driving, whether or not parents should use GPS systems in their cars to keep track of their kids, how MP3's have affected the music industry... anything like that.
