It can be anywhere from 14 to 60 days, depending on your location. There is a chart at http://realestate.findlaw.com/tenant/tenant-resources/tenant-rent-security-deposit-return.html that lists each state's deadline for a landlord to return the deposit or a written accounting of how the deposit was used.

The homes that I rent out I give the deposits back the day the tenant moves out. I have seen other landlords return deposits within 30 days

Legally, the leasing office has 30-60 days to refund your security deposit. But on the downside, if you have not had your apartment inspected with a agent from your leasing office, you are suseptible to the dirty deed of security deposit dismissal, which means you forfeit your security deposit regardless of the actual amount of damages (or lack there of) in the apartment. This has happened to me many times with private leases when I have left the apartment in pristine condition and have not been able to secure even a portion of my security deposit back. Good luck!

Should be less than a month, unless you did damage to the place or you were an unsuitable tenant. I recently moved to another property and received my deposit in 2 weeks.

I'm pretty sur I got mine back within 30 days of the end of the lease for the 2 apartments I was in, but you have to make sure they have your new address to mail you the check.
If you want to be sure, look at your lease.
