"Invaders from outside" (i.e terrorism), political fighting between the ruling class and the Senate (Dem and Republicans), borders that have grown too large and indefensible, an increasing populace indifferance. Sounds like Rome right? No. How about right here in America. What can we do to prevent our own "fall"?

No empire has ever been able to prevent their fall, every one had glory and power and nobody was ever able to maintain it longer than Rome - it would take too many people willing to give up money and profits to reverse the inevitable fall.

We can't. Just get ready for the next dark ages that is coming. If you haven't joined or formed a localized self defense force and stocked up well on food, arms etc, good luck. I give us about another 15 - 20 years tops. My old Poli-Sci professor thinks about 10 is closer.
