Forget for a moment whether the issue of whether she was covert or not at the time of the outing. Just focus on the revealing of her identity. And the fact that she was a Republican. And her husband had just written a damaging op-ed piece that had driven Al Gore into a rage.

In other words, put the shoe on the other foot. Be honest. How would the Republicans in Congress have reacted? Would they have said, "No big deal. She wasn't that important. She wasn't covert. Besides, remember freedom of speech. A liberal newspaper columnist has the right to print anything he wants."

Try hard to be serious.

To the unnamed first respondent: so you don't think this case has had any political impact on President Bush? He may not be even indirectly implicated, but since all those closely associated with him have been, virtually his whole administration has been under attack by Democrats. I'm just implying that Republicans would have done the same to Clinton.

To the second answerer: first of all Clinton was impeached and therefore tried by the Senate. Though he was ultimately acquitted, going through all that was hardly "nothing." He was politically immoblized for months and remained considerably weakened afterward. And there's an interesting parallel with the Libby case. Pundits and politicians have been crying "foul" over Libby's conviction because there was no underlying crime. He was caught in perjury trying to save his boss and his job in the course of an investigation in which no indictments were eventually brought.

Similarly, Clinton was caught lying about his sexual behavior in attempt to save his reputation and marriage. He was "indicted" (impeached) for committing perjury in the course of the investigation of a case in which there was no underlying crime. Remember: Ken Starr was investigating the White Water "scandal" which ultimately resulted in zero indictments when he stumbled on interesting side issues.

As you may recall, Mr. Clinton was impeached for perjury and nothing came of it. I have to assume that nothing would have happened to him no matter what his administration did.
