I understand that people are concerned about raising wild animals in an unnatural environment, but for Christ's sake, how can ANYONE justify wanting to kill this perfectly healthy, well looked after little cub?! Polar bears will be extinct soon anyway according to environmentalists. This whole case is just sick IMO.

"Berlin Zoo rallied to the defence of Knut, a three-month-old polar bear cub, on Tuesday, rejecting demands that the animal be allowed to die after being abandoned by its mother. The fate of "cuddly Knut" has gripped the German capital since his birth in December. Rejected by his mother Tosca, the cub was adopted by a zookeeper who moved into the animal's enclosure to care for him round the clock.

Some animal rights campaigners think this will humanise the bear too much and want the zoo to stop saving young animals. Now three-months-old, little Knut is at the centre of a row over whether he should be allowed to continue living or be put down.

Keith - what a daft question you asked me. I'm not wasting time looking back through every question that was posted today, plus this question isn't exclusive to you. Get real and learn some manners.

I agree with you entirely - there's no way that poor little cub should be killed! Polar bears are fast becoming endangered on the whole. This whole thing is ludicrous.

So animal rights activists want to put down a perfectly healthy Polar Bear cub. Arent they on the endangered species list? Never before was the phrase Loony Lefty more apt. I think anyone with strong left wing leanings should be put down. Not the bear

No this polar bear cub should not be put down
Why anyone would want to kill a living thing because its mother abandoned it is beyond me.
So it will not have a normal life big deal.
what or who does have a NORMAL upbringing in this world,???
Berlin Zoo has the right idea and the people whoi is raising this cub at the moment should be praised not condemed

How can someone say save the animals and then go ahead and decied to kill one for no good reason. The cub's mother may not have wanted it but this animal has a home in the zoo. There are people who love and are willing to take care of it. With the rate that polar bears are disappearing it essental to help keep alive as many as we can.

this poor mite has done no wrong to anyone YET others who hurt the elderly, maim and kill nothing happens to them. If i had the space or my own private zoo i would take or buy the bear myself. Humans are extinct now there are only robotic, heartless so called people trying to play and interfere with nature so leave this bear alone. Let it live. Those who are going to make this decision your mothers decided to let you have life. Would you have liked to been put down at bitrh cause your mum died or deserted you. NO I DONT THINK SO. WISE UP. Give this bear a chance.

The animal rights activists are actually the ones pushing for it to be killed. I don't see how euthanising it would be any better for it. The claim it is unnatural to "domesticate" it by hand rearing and thus it is cruel is also pretty flawed. After all it is in a zoo which is hardly the place where polar bears evolved. Maybe they think it should be out in the wild staeving with the other polar bears on the melting ice sheet?

no, and the fact that it is some animal rights protesters who are calling for it to be killed shows what a bunch of hypocrites they are. i mean these types of people consistently campaign to support and save the lives of millions of animals, especially those that are in danger of being extinct- and yet for some they want to end the life of a polar cub? are these people two-faced or what?

He's in a zoo. Why would he have to be put down? He will be in a zoo for the rest of his life. So what if he becomes slightly humanised? He can be trained to survive in the wild if necessary. This has been done with hand reared lions and tigers. It would be a crime to kill this specimen of an endangered species.

I have a real problem with so-called animal rights activists like PETA and so-forth, who put down thousands of animals a year themselves. Bunch of hypocrites. I fail to see the logic behind this argument with the cub. It's irritating.
