World War 2 was fought from 1939 until 1945. There were two primary sides during it, the axis and the allies. On the allies side were Great Britain and the Soviet Union, who were joined by the US after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 by Japan, as well as other European countries that were against the axis views. On the side of the axis powers were Nazi Germany, Italy, and Japan. The war officially began when Germany invade Poland, yet ended in three stages, with Italy and Germany withdrawing at separate times, and then the Americans using the atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, causing them to surrender.

I suppose it depends on how you define the war.
Some say it began with the Japanese invasion of China in 1931, but the traditional date would be September 1, 1939, when the Wehrmacht (German army) rolled into Poland. U.S. military involvement begun on December 7, 1941, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
The war ended in Europe on May 8, 1945 (V-E day), and in Asia on August 15, 1945 (V-J day).

Spanning much of the globe, World War II resulted in the deaths of over 62 million people, making it the deadliest conflict in human history. The war ended with an Allied victory.

The war started on September 1st, 1939 and victory over Germany was declared on May 8th 1945. Victory over Japan was declared on August 14th 1945. So I would say that the war lasted 5 years, 9 months.

Europe got involved in 1939.
U.S. got involved in 1941.
Conflict resolved in 1945.
Europe: 6 years
U.S.: 4 years
The answer you are probably looking for is 6 years. Although I wouldn't directly state that "WWII lasted for 6 years."
