Today, I came into work and had to make 2 presentations in front of two different groups of students from a local college. Each group had about 10 - 14 people in it. I didn't know I'd be making these presentations today because my associates failed to pass on the message, which means speeches were on the fly. However, I do know plenty about the product so the presentation wasn't too difficult. I'm very shy, and I have a hard time carrying on conversations with one stranger, much less trying to be comfortable talking in front of a group of strangers. I don't know why but I start studdering and my neck gets hot. It gets worse the longer I have to give the presentation. There's no reason to be afraid of most people, so why does my body and mind act this way?

I get nervous before I sing at church for a special.
It is just a matter of time to get used to being in front of a group of people.Focus on something in the room.Do not stare directly at them.Even big singers admt sometimes about getting nervous before performing.Just do your best.

I am exactly the same way. Even when I have to give a presentation at work in front of everyone I know, and consider friends I get nervous. But it is worse for me doing a presentation in front of strangers. I don't know why I get so nervous, but my throat gets dry, my face gets red, sometimes my knees or hands shake. But I really don't know why, other than the fact that I am shy.

It is people you do not know or are familiar with. They do not know you and there is no personal connection. You feel if you mess up you will lose majority of the audience you are speaking to and soon the whole audience will not really pay attention and you had lost, what you consider, to be their first impressions and respect. The best thing is, is not to worry at all about it, if they are serious in what you are talking about they will listen and be courteous. If they do not, do not worry about them, they are idiots. Yes, I said idiots, who are they to not pay attention to you? Are they up giving speeches to other colleges over the, obviously, great work you have accomplished? Nope. So do that, sure it might seem mean, but don't worry about the people who do not pay attention to you. Worry about the people who are paying attention and act like you are only speaking to them. Take a deep breath, and if need be, a bottle of water to keep your mouth from going dry. And speak as if you know them all on a personal level, especially the ones who are paying attention to you.

The number one fear is of public speaking. Many actors and comedians and tv personalities had to overcome their fear. Generally it is because the person isn't prepared (sound familiar) but by golly give you cudos for gettin up there!!!!! If I know the topic and I am very passionate about it I have no problem but if a prof. gives me a topic I hate it. So, remember each person in the group are terrifed of public speaking and then imagine them all naked. Seriously that's what we learned, just remember all those people are doing the same thing to you. LOL

It is common, so don't think it is just you.

all eyes being on you, not being prepared, lack of confidence, all these and many other factors play a part in making us nervous

just take a few breaths, have water with you, be prepared (as much as possible, try to have confidence in yourself and remember that you can do it....they are there to listen to you because they want to know what you have to say

well I'm the same, i hate speaking in front of large groups of people. My hands start shaking, then even my knees!
For me, it's because I get paranoid and think people's gonna laugh at me and totally disagree with what i'm saying - even though I know they're fine.

it seems that you are nervous infront on people when it comes to presenting certain things, you are not use to being infront of the crowd everyday. it's like a challenge you gotta take. Pretend the people were cupcakes instead.LoL

I have given public speeches and I guess the nervousness comes from what other people may think.
