a psychiatrist is also a medical doctor, so in additon to college, you will likely have med school and an internship. If you don't like school, this is not the job for you. If you want to be a psychiatrist without the stress of college and med school and without the luxury of the income, i recommend you get a crappy little 4 year liberal arts degree and go to work as a state social worker. You perform the same function, but you can't prescribe meds or make a lot of money.

A psychiatrist is a MD, so you have to go to medical school, residency, intern... the whole nine yards. So, if you're not interested in dissecting bodies in gross anatomy class, this isn't a route for you.

A psychologist, however, does not to go to medical school. A PhD in psychology is required. You never need to cut open a corpse, if you don't want. Expect to spend time working in a mental hospital as part of your training.

A licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) needs a Master's degree in social work, plus whatever extra you need to pass your licensing exam. Some have a PhD in social work.

Then there's unlicensed councilors and advisors, who may not have done anything beyond a BA degree, perhaps even in an unrelated field.

Lastly, you could become clergy. The number of years of school depends on what religion and denomination.

In the end, I'm going to guess that you don't want to be a psychiatrist. Just a guess.

A route you can take is to get a Masters degree in social work or psychology (just another 2 years beyond undergrad). Work in the feld and see if you like it. If so, you can always go back and get that PhD or, if you really want to enter the medical field, the medical degree.
