You forgot to mention Ignorance.
Europeans are amazed how the average American is ignorant compared to the average European.

Just read the number of comments above that just mention the World War to argue that we all dream about being American... It is simplistic. And there is no such "better nation" but just some people that are very patriotic or not.

It is worth traveling outside US, talk with other people (even if it is not in English) and see if Americans are so envied by the outside world. This is nothing to do with resentment but is rather the American self-confidence, including in the belief that US values are universal, which is a mistake and sometimes an offence that indeed causes some Europeans to look down at Americans.

Well they're not! But I have a few theories on why we have a bad rep.

1. Look at our programming on tv. What would you think of a country if all you had to go by was Girls Gone Wild commercials and a reality show about a black man that wears a freakin clock around his neck? What about Paris Hilton and her slut-twin?

2. Look at our media. Nancy Grace indeed! She needs to be put in front of a firing squad and have about 40 rounds pumped into her nazi-fem mouth.

3. Hillary Clinton.

4. And while we're there, Bill Clinton. The man was president, terroist were blowing our interests up around the world, killing our people and he's doing interns in the White House on the time clock. Doesn't it bother anyone that he was being paid to screw Monica?

5. Ted Kennedy

6. Then there's the fact that America is so big that we do tend to believe that all nations 'get' hour slang, and are up on all the latest US events. Not so.

I believe they see Americans as braggarts. In some circles, it's considered unattractive to boast "We're number 1" all the time. If we're number 1, why the need to brag? Why do we put other countries down all the time? Those countries like the way things are. They are number 1 in things we don't apparently don't want to be: healthcare, longevity, the ratio of children born alive, maternity leave for women, and we are #53 in freedom of the press(it's ironic the founder's made it first). But we are number 1 in military. It's like arguing your state or school is better than someone else's.

As an American, i does no longer say that many Europeans look down on people. some do, some do no longer. i visit declare although, that there seems to be a feeling of sarcastic pity from a lot of them while relating people. the final thought that we as a rustic, are a team of mindless, flag waving syphocants who're being brainwashed by ability of a biased media and dumbed down training equipment, giving people the impact that obtainable is a few spectacular, insightful media source it incredibly is attainable to the completed international, different than of course to people. From my international travels, I never as quickly as discovered this independent media source that they noted, and have confidence me, I searched! i think sarcastic pity is a sprint greater advantageous than being regarded down upon (if there incredibly is a multitude of distinction between the two), yet i visit declare one concern. In my travels to different international places, as an American, that is many times quite hassle-free to influence. only point out some thing on the subject of the rustic which you're in to between the locals, and watch their surprised reactions, no rely how insignificant your actuality could be. i think of this many times stems from the drastically held concept by ability of others, that people comprehend certainly no longer something of the international exterior of their very very own usa. So once you cutting-edge even the slightest little bit of know-how approximately their usa, many times that is spoke back to with amazement. that is sort of a 2 way highway. that is superb to be waiting to influence somebody, yet that it stems from the actuality that many view us people as being thoroughly unaware of something different than us, isn't so superb. As for them believing that we are pigs. some do, some do no longer. nonetheless, now and returned i think of that a lot of my fellow people are pigs besides. So there you have it.

Europe has surpassed us in numerous moral categories, such as health care and animal rights legislation. And their religion, even the Christian varieties, are much more rational and far less barbaric than ours. We are a country of fanatics by their standards.
Many of them can speak multiple languages, and they can find countries other than their own on a map. They look down on us because they make us look like anti-intellectual mental-midgets.

Europeans don't look down on all Americans but we do like to laugh at the stereotype rednecks etc. Just as Americans like to laugh at posh Brits, cheese eating French, sausage eating Germans etc etc. Maybe it's you with an inferiority complex ;-)

Hmmm I would mainly say the level of education

I don´t look down at Chinese or Indians because they are willing to learn from each other, to exchange ideas, cooperate, willing to improve, don´t have a too high ego.... and a lot of them are really smart...

Also the US doesn´t consider itself part of the world. It´s really not we look down at... The US sees itself at the center of the world just like the french had the bad habit to..

we would prefear not to see the US, have news not filled with the US and middle east and instead learn from other cultures.

you made your choice, political, military, educational, economical, societal, environmental,... we made ours and we´re happy with them.

And just look at all the problems going on in France, Germany, England and The Netherlands with you know what.

Just ignore the French, the Brits are probably resentful for losing twice to us, the Germans because we beat them back into their own country twice, Russia because of the whole Cold War, and yet, how many people here in the good ol' US of A are of European descent? Quite a few, which means that we are influenced by THEM!
