I teach eighth grade English and we're going to be getting new literature books next year. As part of our curriculum, we're asked to teach something from the science fiction genre at some point. Our new book, which I examined but didn't personally order, doesn't have any sci-fi material. Can anyone recommend a good science fiction short story that would be appropriate for middle school students?

If you could post a link or provide an author's name, I would appreciate it.

"The Cold Equations" by Tom Godwin (wikipedia article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cold_Equations) is a classic.

Perfect! = "The Supernaturalist" by Eoin Colfer. Author of the famed Artemis Fowl books, a perfect series for 8th graders. But for science fiction, Eoin Colfer really outdid himself in the Supernaturalist. For description of book, see link below. I'm really not a science fiction person, but I read it over vacation and loved it - full of suspense and everything else a good sci fic needs. It has the fighting scenes for the guys and a teeny bit of romance for the girls. Very good read. Probably the best sci fic I have ever read, and it is designed for middle school kids. Hope you like it!

Well any science fiction short story by Isaac Asimov would be good. Especially anything in the I, Robot series of short stories. Students might enjoy the connection to the movie, even though it's not perticularly accurate. Nightfall is another story by Isaac Asimov.

"I have no mouth and I must scream"

It's not quite appropriate (some references to sex) but it is all together an excellent and nightmarish vision of the future. Great storytelling, and captures the interest of those who aren't fans of sci-fi -- while remaining wholly science fiction.
