The Verbally Abusive Relationship. It deals with covert verbal abuse - which is manipulation. Also a section on how to deal with them. One of the most helpful books I read in grad school. Helped me a lot.

i'd forget the books and buy a gun, it's much more effective!
if you want to play it safe, when he gets home from work, instead of a hug and kiss, try kicking him in the nuts and punching him in the face.
