Wickman is old, and you dont give up a hot young guy like Franceour for Mike Gonzalez for him to set up.... right?

My guess is Wickman starts out the closer and Gonzalez will end the season there. i think he will also close against lefties since that is his specialty. By the way, the braves gave up LaRoche not Franceour.

Fat Bob is discounted every season yet when the job needs to get done guess who trots out there and delivers. Just because he looks like everyones drunk uncle doesnt mean he cant produce....his record says he is very capable. Getting Gonzalez and Soriano were just brilliant moves by the Braves management who understand that if you have a dominating bullpen you just shorten the games up and the starters can give a top effort for 6 innings and they turn the game over to the pen. Giving up LaRoche for a great arm is a no brainer...they have hitting prospects and it is easier to win with great pitching than great hitting. If Joey Devine shows his stuff the braves now have 4 lights out pitchers in the pen....could be the start of another run of playoff appearances.

Wickman is still a very good closer and the reason why the Braves picked him up last year. Gonzalez will give him some needed rest in other save opportunities this season and will be the closer soon after this season probably. Jeff Francouer is of course a great young outfielder so he isn't going anywhere.

Lets face it. Wickman is washed up. The braves brought in rafael soriano and mike gonzalez to make their bullpen alot deeper, and to no longer rely on closers like chris reitsma anymore. In all honesty wickman once was a solid closer, but hes getting old and he has 2 nasty releivers behind him. Soriano has been a beast in set up role but never a closer. In my opinion, mike gonzalez will end up being the closer, with him and soriano being a fantastic duo.

Wickman may be old but, he is still a strong closer. He saved in 18 of his 19 save opportunities last season with the Braves. Wickman always has a low ERA in the 2.60 range. He also barely blows saves (10 in the past three seasons). This guy still has about three years left in him.

Probably Wickman, if he stinks and I hope he does, it'll be Gonzalez, who I hope stinks too.
