File for a divorce.

I would probably be outraged and hurt at first and think I wouldn't do it just to spite them, I would tell my spouse what the inlaws had suggested and let him or her deal with that situation. No I wouldn't wear anything just to please anyone, if you don't feel good about yourself and how you dress, you will be miserable. Sounds like you are in for a rocky road with them. If they don't approve of how you dress, what else don't they approve of? This issue is serious and not to be taken lightly. Some boundries have to be set if you are going to have a successful relationship with them.

With my mother in law this would be normal behaviour, however I would tell her where she could put her tweed and paisley suits using some very strong 4 letter words. And my father in law wouldnt dare suggest it

Pretend to go along with them and each time wear something else that's completley different, but state that you thought it was tweed and/or paisley acting shocked when they ask about it.

Fat chance of that happening.

No one has told me what to wear since I have been old enough to dress myself.

The only restrictions on how I dress are job related and this is totally respected as I am a professional and the job demands a certain code of dress.

Same would apply for clubs etc. but that is more of no sneaker thing and not telling you how to dress.

laugh. then become very confused. or point blank ask them if they are serious and if so why the hell do they want you to wear paisley?

tell them you can't respect yourself if you wear a paisley suit and if they want you to respect them and the people around you, they need to be aware that you will not be dressing like an old golfer on a seniors cruise!

Just tell 'em you're really not a tweedy or paisley kind of guy, but how would plaids & stripes worn together be? LOL

I would spontaniously express my disgust with a bit of spontanious freestyle Modern Dance, followed by sitting under a table pretending to be a startled Gibon.

That should sort that out!

I'd tell them "okay", then go right on wearing what I wear every day.

My inlaws live two states away, so I never see them anyway.
