it is coming from the engine. My uncle thinks I threw a rod. Any ideas? 1994 Toyota Celica ST Coupe

This could be any of a large number of problems. If it's a "rattle" then I would check for a loose heat shield or something similar. If it's a consistent "knock" which happens at regular intervals, then your uncle may be right. Could be a rod, valve, lifter, cam lobe, or any number of other internal parts. If this is the case, you need to figure out what it is and get it fixed ASAP or you risk destroying the engine completely.

You might be able to use some Seafoam as a stopgap measure until you can diagnose the problem more thoroughly, but don't rely on this for more than a day or two.

You can try a compression check. If you threw a rod it will be 0 for that cylinder. The car's not worth that much. If the rest of it's ok you should be able to find a used engine for $700 or so. Don't fix the old one if you threw a rod. You'll spend a fortune and it will still be an old, worn out, ready to die in a gruesome manner motor.

Could be just about anything. Could be your lifters also. Could be you have something loose. What part of the engine does the sound come from?
