There's a bit of a dark mark at the top - looks like a bit of water may have got in - but it isn't dirt and doesn't stop you seeing the reg no.

To be very honest I'm a female driver so don't know much other than it was the same plate last MOT. I went back to collect my cat today and they said take it - the MOT is in the car - but the cord thing (my words, not theirs) that opens the bonnet didnt come so we can fix that tomorrow. Is it me or are they having a laugh???

What was the wording on the failure.
Delamination (the backing coming off and getting dirty) happens a lot but personally it would have to really obscured before I failed it.

If your plate fits the prescribed criteria your car would not have failed. There must be gaps or spacings, letter sizes or slants that caused the plate to be outwith the criteria. An MOT station would lose their licence for failing a car without good cause. You can go to your local Environmental Health Department and speak to some one from Trading Standards who may be able to help.

If the letters and numbers are correctly spaced and formed (ie not italic etc), not deteriorated, and there's no other feature on it making it likely to be misread (from 20 meters), it should pass. The vt30 (red) fail sheet should tell you exactly why it failed, and the tester him or herself should be able to justify this not only to you but to VOSA, the testing agency. Ask the test station in the first instance, a good one will be happy to explain, and show you the relevent section in the testing manual.

There may be a crack or split, it may be loose or the actual figures could be faded which means that you can't read it clearly
