Consider this: 193 career wins and 154 career saves going into the 2007 season. He has done everything his team has asked of him in order to keep his team competitve over the years. He's been a Cy Young Award winner, a 20 game winner, was the best relief pitcher in baseball for 3 seasons and will no doubt win his 200th game this year. He has a world championship to his credit so will all this be enough for Smoltz to be elected into the hall?

Smoltz is an interesting case. 193 wins over 18 years actually isn't overwhelming, although the three-plus years in the bullpen hurt him in that department. He's only won more than 17 games once in his career, and one Cy Young doesn't make him an automatic choice. Baseball-reference.com compares him to Kevin Brown and Curt Schilling; Brown probably won't make it while Schilling has an outside chance.

Smoltz has been good for a long, long time, though. The Hall voters have a little trouble with guys like this -- not great, but very good for quick a while. See Blyleven and Kaat and Niekro, just for openers.

I think the relief stints probably help him, and he goes in at some point.

Sorry, the answer is no. Those injury plagued years really hurt him. There are plenty of players with better credentials who didn't make it. Look at Jack Morris. He had 254 wins and actually beat John Smoltz head to head in the world series. He threw a 10 inning shut out that game and won the world series. He also pitched Detroit to a series in 1984. Saying he's Smoltz has been the best reliever the last three years in baseball is purely opinion. Truth be told most managers would take Riveria over Smoltz hands down. It's a shame but that's the HOF and it's not perfect.

Smoltz of course one of the main reasons why the Braves won all of those consecutive division titles as he was there through everyone of them. He is closing in on over 200 wins and has over 150 saves too along with a Cy Young Award and has been a dominate pitcher in all those post season games as well. I think he will be entered into the Baseball Hall of Fame for certain.

Smoltz will absolutely make the Hall of Fame, and very likely on the first ballot. He's been a dominant starter, closer, then went back to being an excellent starter.

He missed the entire 2000 season, and with the exception of five starts, pitched exclusively in relief from 2001-04, which prevented his win total from being much higher. Smoltz's performance as a closer in that time probably sealed a spot in the Hall, though. His ability to become an effective starter again probably gets him in on the first ballot.

I think John Smoltz will be elected as a Hall of Famer. He has had a long career which shows his durability, has a championship, and has had legitimate success as both a relief pitcher and a starting pitcher; which shows his loyalty to his club, to do whatever they need him to do and to do it well. It also shows that he is an overall great pitcher. A Cy Young Award just compliments his already long resume. I think he deserves to be elected into the hall.

His numbers in some ways can be comparable to another HOFer...Dennis Eckersley. They are the only 2 pitchers to have a 20 win season and a 50 save season. I don't think he's a first ballot, but he should get in. If Don Sutton is in, why not Smoltz.

Smoltzy will go to the Hall of Fame

He's had a tremendous career with many accolades and has always delivered in the clutch. His numbers are good enough on their own.

I think he has done enough to warrant Hall of Fame induction. His #29 will also be retired by the Braves when he calls it a career.
