However human rights groups have protested that it is against the rights of those who choose to disguise their facial expressions so their modesty is protected. Teachers have a difficult job as it is and with the recent news that Asians (News24 BBC 20/03/07) are least likely to report child abuse, then how can a teacher at least stand a possible way of being able to identify by facial expression those at risk. I do not understand why any society can find it necessary and to justify the hiding of identity, other than to disguise their purpose or to subjugate members of their own society or cultural group.

Some answers have missed the point, how can we protect those whose culture requires them to be all but invisible.

Ok let me make it clear to Leigh, I believe in COD not GOD and your ranting are a prime example why. The original question was to do with the RIGHTS of those who rely on us to protect them CHILDREN, or do you just want to rant on as to why your religion is better than everyone else's.

NAH, you can't be doing what religion has been doing for thousands of years.

To Mariah69000, I hear what you are saying, but the words "them lot" sound a bit the same as those whom each individual consider "them". Whether we like it or not, free speech and tolerance are not the norm in all countries, which is why we should not stoop to comments berating those whose religion or politics differ from ours. If their views differ from ours to the extent that they feel the need to change our society, then they should consider moving to a society where their views are tolerated, however while they are amongst us I will defend their right to free speech.

OH, BY THE WAY CAN WE GET BACK TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION!!!!
I am more concerned about a vulnerable section of our society.

The hiding of identity for half the population can be convenient - for men, who always have someone to dominate over (no competition in any way from a woman) and for some women (see previous answerer). What more convenient than not having to prove you are worth more to the society than breeding children? Plus, no matter how good/bad parent/person/professional you are - your support from a man is guaranteed. The only thing you have to worry about is to cut the best deal with a husband as rich as possible. I wonder what it depends on? Looks? Piousness? Connections? Well, someone else will think about it either.
In a multicultural environment, I think it is especially important to keep the secular character of the state. Otherwise we'll end up fighting in Parliament whether to introduce the Sheriat or bring back the Inquisition.

Jeezus why do people like Leigh have to go on a huge rant over a simple question!!! Them lot should really stop preaching their religion at every opportunity they can get. Give it a rest!

Anyways, I think its about time that this came into force, it irritates me that they come over here and walk around in these mad outfits, but when we go over to their countries we'd be stoned for wearing a skirt! or having a tattoo! I think they should get rid of veils full stop! The amount of women that I saw using them to steal things with was unreal!

If we went to Dubai we would not be expected to drink as alcohol is against the law.

OK, so it is not against the law to wear a veil in the UK but they should respect how we do things in this country too. We're too soft and let people do whatever they want here! If muslim girls want to wear a veil then they should not do it in public here as not being able to see someones face makes British people feel uncomfortable, just as a woman shouldn't walk through a town in a muslim country without covering up. It's all about respecting the country you're in.

It seems funny that as soon as this country decides to fall in line with certain other countries, some group or other start spouting about human rights or some such right.Let them first of all lobby ministers in Holland, Brussels, France, Italy,Germany where these
coverings are illegal, there is an instant fine handed out in parts of Belgium for anyone seen wearing one in public.Stick to your guns England stand up and be counted. Remember when in Rome, we also like certain things but we would not be allowed to enjoy in a muslim country, does that count as against our rights.I doubt it very much.

If you listen to some of the Muslim community they are against the veil being worn in school.
Children should wear the uniform as designated by the school.

I respect that you do not understand. But as a Muslim who Chooses to follow my faith and wear a scarf ( I do not wear a Veil but I respect those who make that choice) You clearly do not understand chooseing to live a life for God. You clearly do not understand that this is part of our faith. It is not about a "cultural group" It is about God. Would you call a nun "subjigated" NO you understand she has made a choice. SO have these woman. The only difference is in Islam the most Pious woman are encouraged to have children, because it is recognized that a woman who is dedicated to her faith is a better parent.

Do you know why Nuns dress so similar to Muslims. Do you realize that even the bible tells woman to cover their hair when they pray? 1 corinthians chaper 11 3-10. Please take the time to read this verse in the bible. Muslims like nuns are in a constant state of prayer. Words like Alhumdulilla (all prase is for God))
MashAllah(thanks to God) SubhanAllah (Glory to God) and Bismillah ( In the name of God) are a major part of our vocabulary along with so many others. We thank God for every thing we do.
You have a serious fear problem. Are you afraid she is hideing a bomb beneith that 5 inch peace of cloth. Are you paranoid she is laughing at you? or sticking her tongue out at you.

Or does it just upset you that she CAN NOT be manipulated by men through belittleing her looks.

In the US woman are constantly subjigated and belittled. They are so belittled and reduced to a pretty face that they are ending up on the psychologist couch in record numbers. Muslim woman only care about the opinion of God and their husbands. They don't need to spend millions on makeup and diet products. They don't need to spend hours in front of the mirrior to please men. A man can not devalue me. I am worth more than my looks. Woman in Islam have not been make to feel that being a mother is a low pursuit and that a good woman can work full time and still be a good mother. We are taught that being a Mother is the Highest pursuit. And that our husbands OWE us support for caring for then and there children. So if we do work our husbands STILL have to support us, and if we want to waste our money it is ours to do. I feel I have been more Subjigated by American and European men before I started wearing my scarf than by any Muslim man. I was never pressured to wear a scarf but I have recieved so much pressure by Americans and Europeans NOT to. I f the student is getting good grades and her eyes are open (ie she is not alseep) and she is not disrupting the class with noise or actions it is none of your business what her expression is. Just because Christians feel they can pick and choose what to follow from the Bible, does not mean that Muslims have to do the same.

Over one person’s lifetime, at least 50,000 individuals will die as a direct result of their eating disorder.

Eating Disorders affect a large number of people in the United States. The statistics state that:

Approximately 7 million girls and women struggle with eating disorders.

Approximately 1 million boys and men struggle with eating disorders.

Unfortunately, the media pushes an unnatural body type, making it difficult for us to accept natural beauty:

The average American woman is 5’4” tall and weighs 140 pounds The average American model is 5’11” tall and weighs 117 pounds. Most fashion models are thinner than 98% of American women.

Children are influenced by their parents, peers and the media:

42% of elementary school students between the 1st and 3rd grades want to be thinner.

80% of children who are ten years old are afraid of being fat.

Calorie restriction and other diets are common:

25% of men and 45% of women are on a diet on any given day.

80% of women are dissatisfied with their appearance.

51% of 9 and 10 year old girls feel better about themselves if they are on a diet.

35% of “normal dieters” progress to pathological dieting. Of those, 25% will progress to partial or full syndrome eating disorders.

91% of women recently surveyed on a college campus had attempted to control their weight through dieting, 22% dieted “often” or “always.”

Americans spend over $40 billion on dieting and diet related products each year

The diet industry is a 40 billion dollar industry. This figure is amazing considering 95% of all dieters will regain their lost weight within 1-5 years.

Finch--- IN most Muslim countries Christains are not subject to the no drinking law. In Pakistan they simply have to declair they are Christian and they get a card to buy Alcohol, which is sold by other Christians.
