In a nutshell, what was the conflict? The reason for conflict was simply that people wanted to drink, would not you agree? The effects were that people drank more than ever, yes?

I would think that you are right. However I think the main conflict was the establishment of the black market. No matter who you were- politicians, police, and everyday citizens alike found a way to have their cocktails. I also recall reading that many people died from drinking bad bathtub gin and other homemade booze.
Prohibition actually increased the demand for liquor as well as established a strong black market, and gave organized crime a step ladder to success.
I imagine the repeal of prohibition left a lot of people red faced.

prohibition actually started back in the mid-1800s and was in effect in 26 of the 48 states by 1916 4 years before national prohibition. The temperance movement was exploding all over the nation by the late 1800's and early 1900s. religious factions, spearheaded by methodist leaders saw it as their duty to rid the country of the sin of drunkenness and the easiest way to do that was to ban alcohol. But prohibition ended up causing more problems that it solved.

It saw an interesting piece on the history channel that brought up the fact that at that time many of the major beer (alcohol) producers were of german descent. With america entering the 1st world war, the Germans here in the US were looked down upon, and the government/people certainly didn't want our money going to germans. I dont know how much that actually impacted prohibition, but it is an interesting side note.

You sure do like the word 'conflict', even if it doesn't apply to your subject. The effects weren't that people drank more, it was that criminal organizations started selling alchohol because it was illegal to get it anywhere else. This caused more crime, murders, violence etc. Just like drugs.
