Romans gave the names of the months as we know it today. The only difference is that the first month was March.
Specifically,
MARCH = Mars.This month, Romans worshiped Greek God of War Aris.
APRIL = Aprilis = aperere (latin word) means opening, blossom. The month that flowers blossom.
MAY = Maius in Greek "tis maias" and means midwife's, because Romans at the first day of this month honored the mother of Greek God Hermes. She was the Godess of Honor and Respect. There is also, another opinion - not accepted by scientists - that this month took his name from the latin word "maiores", which means "old aged men", in order to honor the olders.
JUNE = JUNIUS from the Greek Godess Hera (Roman name of Hera is Juno). There is also, another opinion about this month - not accepted from the academic world - that this month took the name from the Roman word "iuniores", which means young men, in order to honor young Roman warriors.
JULY = Intially, this month was "Quintilis" which means "fifth", but it renamed to July, in order to remind to the people the tragic assassination of Jules Ceasar.
AUGUST = First name of this month was "Sextilis" = "sixth", but changed to August as it was the lucky month of the Emperor Augustus.
SEPTEMBER = Septimus = Seventh
OCTOBER = from the Greek number "okto" (in latin it remains the same = okto) = eighth.
NOVEMBER = Nonus (from the Greek number "ennia" in latin "nove") = nineth
DECEMBER = Decimus (from the Greek number "deka" in latin "decem") = tenth.
JANUARY = Januarius (from the Roman God Janus)
FEBRUARY = Februarius = (from the Roman Godess Juno Februa)
