I think it is pretty obvious it's because the overwhelming majority of them are insecure losers that aspired to atthority positions to get back at the world and force people to "respect" them but I would like to hear some other opinions.

That is a basic start to understanding their completely d i c k head behaviour, however, I think that the few who join the force with good intentions are eventually corrupted by the institutional culture and mindset that teaches them how to act like complete *****.
I am a middle aged, middle class totally law abiding light skinned woman and every cop (but a few) which I have ever interacted with for any reason was a total a r s e hole.

From personal experience, I've only run into a very few nice cops. Most of them are jerks, but it could be for various reasons. Their jobs are pretty dangerous and I know they don't get paid much. They may be this way because it's a good power trip for them too. Some act like they can do anything to you just because they have a license and badge to carry a gun. It's just ridiculous sometimes. Either way, I think they have a bad rep because most of them really are jerks.

This is one of those questions like, "When did you stop beating your wife?" asked of someone who isn't known to beat his wife.
___I haven't found that most cops are jerks. Most are driven by a sincere desire to protect, and though some protect in inappropriate manners, most are just people doing their jobs. But when you encounter one of the jerks, the encounter really stands out, because of the power relations in the roles.
___If you consider the hazards that cops face, then you might be more willing to cut them some slack. How often do you have to deal with armed and dangerous people in your line of work? How many times do you have to deal with pugnatious drunks, or interfere in domestic violence? Cops are often touchy when they get attitude from strangers, because they encounter so many people for whom the attitude is a prelude to violence, and they have no way of telling whether you're one of the ones who might flip out on them. So when they yell, "Keep your hands on the wheel!" in what seems to be a tone of bogus authoritarianism, or do something else of the sort, don't get your jockstrap in a knot. Just go along with it. If you're too touchy about being yelled at, you won't be as able to detect the fine points that discriminate OK cops from the occasional bad apple. And you'll be more likely to provoke a prudent cop into having to escalate his show of force.

I have known a fair number of cops over my lifetime and I have never considered any of them to be jerks. Some of them have been among the coolest people I know. Two or three of them have become great friends.

Get pulled over lately?? ;-)

My brother's a cop, and I don't consider him a complete jerk. But for police in general, it would be nice if they would concentrate on the real criminals and leave us everyday people alone. Geez, all I did was drive a car 1/4 of a mile with no inspection sticker on it......

HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEW LATELY. MOST COPS ARE RACIST, STEREOTYPING JACK OFF, WHO HAVE A CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDER BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T GET ANY LAST NIGHT.
