Music! I would sing the scale and my daughter would mimic back the scale in her high pitch little baby sound. It was amazing! And scary at first because I was not expecting to hear this being sung back to me especially from a baby who can't even talk. Babies love music and they have favorite songs or sounds. Favorites will STOP them dead in their tracks. They will stop crying or stop playing with a toy and listen. You can go for a drive (kids love to go places) I have two kids that are now young adults. When they were little we used to always go to places like the baby beach, or go sit and watch the sunset, or go to the swap meet, or to the market. We would also go to special stores that sold toys for kids to increase their IQ and teacher stores and we would look around I'd let them try a few things out. Or Go to a music section of a store and see if they have soft music, or kiddie music samples that you can listen to. Or go to a new age store, they have a lot of music samples that are for meditating, or with nature sounds, or the sound of ocean waves, she may like these and may even get sleepy and start taking extra naps!

she may not be bored she may be cranky instead. If she only takes one 1 hour nap a day thats not enough sleep for a 5 month old. She should at least get two 1 hour naps a day, try giving her another nap later in the day but dont let her sleep pass 4:00 pm.

I really wouldn't suggest as someone else just had, putting your 5 mth old in front of the t.v for an hour!!! If you need hands free time to do stuff put her in a bouncer chair or one of those door frame bouncer seats and put on a nice cd. Story c.d will probably not work, but younger babies love nursery rhyme c.ds. Good to get them used to familiar songs at a young age too.
If all else fails the good old cardboard box always works a treat!!! (for baby to play with, not to put them in)

Do you have a play gym on the floor? Or tried a bouncer looking out the window? These are just some suggestions I use with my little one. I look on eBay for all kinds of baby toys and new things.

My kid loved watching Boohbahs. She would sit there and stare at the TV for the full half hour giving me a little time to clean or do whatever else I needed to do. If it's not too cold, you can take her for a walk too. Going outside is good for your health as well as the babys.

Get this DVD "A very Wompkee Christmas" It will keep him/her busy. My two kids started watching at one month and was clued, I could not believe how this $ 4.00 movie I grabbed at the super market worked. You can find it on Ebay.

What about an educational CD/Video? I mean, it's not like there is too much more to do. I mean your baby is only 5.

Go for walks....
