Probably one thing no one wants to believe. Elderly often have to choose between food and medicine, food or heat. This has been going on for a long time. It is real. And, real sad.

In the 1980's when I worked as a grocery store clerk, for 7 years. It was a fact then. I know of elderly who supplimented their food with pet food.
In 2006 I again worked in a grocery store and again noticed the same trend.
The elderly are throw away in our society and the realization that they get 10.00 per month for Food Stamps on a 600.00 fixed income or less is horrendous. Their medicines bills, utilities, mortgage if unpaid, and taxes stretch them to the limits.
It is not an urban legend. It is the sad treatment of our Senior's who live in poverty.

I know what you mean.. People would be shocked if they new the truth abouth poverty among some of our elderly folk.. You only have to go into the charity cloths shops and they are always elderly folk who mostly shop in them because they have very little money for new cloths.. You can see the ignorance out there with people by reading the first two answers you have got..

Can you provide some real documented cases of poor elderly people buying dog food because they cannot afford food? I have NEVER seen that very old urban myth documented. I believe if you really try to find the source of that legend, that it will be much the same as the old ghost stories we used to tell around the campfire and swear they were true.

Dog food is expensive. If people can't think to pick up a box of mac and cheese or a package of Ramen noodles which is MUCH cheaper than pet food, then they just shouldn't be shopping by themselves.

Shirley - I'm not being a "smart azz" as you say. It's the truth. There are other ways of getting protein and it is a lot cheaper than pet food. Pet food is just expensive in general. Pasta is CHEAP. There may be cases where elderly people are eating pet food to supplement their diet, but they don't have to do that. They just don't. End of story. you don't have to be rude. I wasn't trying to be

I hadn't heard of that since the Reagan era.
I agree, though, I am not interested in pet food when I can get rice and beans. Meat is not an essential nutrient; and pet food doesn't taste that great to humans.

I know enough to know that Katie and the next smart azz know nothing about the poor. Yes some of the elderly do sometimes have to eat dog food. Many have to choose between food or their meds. Its a damn shame that our government doesnt give a hoot about its own people any more than it does.
