What is the best detergent out there to preserve the color of your clothes?

It usually is not the detergent you use. I used to manage a laundromat and COLD WATER WASH IS BEST for colors and whites.

Reds are the worst. If you are having problems with reds running try a color catcher, I believe it is from Spray 'n Wash.

Another great product is called DYSOLVE I can only find it in laundromats in single serve packaging. It is great for greasy clothing and some stains.

Another tip is not to dry clothing on high heat. This has a tendcy of fading color.

Tide does have a detergent that helps with preventing color fade. I have used it on my colors for about a year now and it does seem to help. Using cold water and not letting them completely dry in the dryer helps also.
