This goes in cycles every year. This year was the SEC in a landslide. What I would like to see is what the ACC - Big Ten challenge they do in basketball with the football teams. They should have one were where all of the power conferences play another for a week depending on how they did the previous year. Pac-10 against Big East, Big-10 against the ACC, and Big XII against the SEC. Then drop the bowls and have a playoff. Think about the money this would generate for college football.

The SEC is best and it isn't even close. Each and every year the SEC champion should be in the national championship game. Put a team like USC in the SEC and you can forget about them going undefeated year in and year out.
The SEC has more combined national championships, total wins, bowl wins, and bowl appearances.
The level of competition in the SEC is unmatched. Add to the fact that there is much more fan support, money, and following, and it's the best conference hands down. Media darlings like OSU, and Notre Dame are way overrated and this year just proved it when LSU throttled Nuter Dumb and Florida raped OSU who were "unbeatable".
It's easy for an ignorant anti-SEC blabbermouth to spew off his uneducated pie hole but when a conference plays in SO MANY MORE bowls than every other conference, they are destined to have more losses.....It's hard to lose to a ranked opponent when you aren't even playing a ranked opponent which most other conferences do. Thus, the disparity.
In short, the SEC rules college football. Always have, always will.

Undoubtedly, from top to bottom, the Southeastern Conference. Not only did Florida win the National Championships, by quite a bit, but LSU routed Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Even perennial SEC bottom feeders Kentucky and South Carolina, made and won their bowl games. The Southeastern Conference as a whole went 6-2 in bowl games last season. That's 8 teams from a 12 team conference making bowl games. And at least half of the conference winning their bowl games. That's about as dominant as it gets.
If Division I had a playoff, the SEC would be even more dominant because they play tough all season long. And when they get outside of their conference they dominate.
And seriously Got M, are you still complaining about me being a girl who actually knows something about football. I used wikipedia as a source in one question about an eternity ago and you're still reeling because my answer got chosen over yours??? I must be some convincing "wikipedia buff" because anyone who reads all my answers knows that I obviously have an idea of what I'm talking about. I can't help that you don't like my opinion, because that's just what it is, an opinion. The best conference in the country is the SEC, they dominate pretty much every year. And it seems that almost everyone answering this question agrees. So seriously, stop stalking me in questions and stop emailing me with your whining. It's ridiculous.
And by the way, what top ten are you referring to? LSU and Florida went #1 and #3 in the last AP Poll just this last year (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/rankingsindex).
And in last year's final BCS Standings, THREE SEC TEAMS finished in the Top 10 with #2 Florida, #4 LSU, and #9 Auburn (http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/poll?poll=BCS). No other conference came close in those rankings.
And I don't believe anyone here saw a Pac-10 team in the National Championship this last year. You do realize a SEC team won the National Championship in football this last year right? And your Pac-10 went 3-3 in bowl games last season (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/bowls06/news/story?id=2473969).
They had one BCS win compared to the SEC's two BCS wins. Those two top teams in the SEC beat Notre Dame and Ohio State. And last I checked, quite a few football fans will agree those are two pretty reputable teams. Since the BCS came about, the SEC is 9-4 and the Pac-10 is 7-4. And the SEC has one more BCS National Championship then the Pac-10 with 3 (Tennessee in 98-99, LSU 03-04, Florida 06-07). Also LSU, Florida, and Tennessee are undefeated in BCS Championship apperances. The SEC has the highest winning percentage among conferences with more then one BCS apperances with .692, versus the Pac-10's .636. The SEC also has the most BCS apperances at 13, with the most wins at 9. Now that's domination.
(http://www.bcsfootball.org/bcsfb/alltime). And as far as SEC teams with BCS apperances, we have Florida, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, and Alabama. The Pac-10 has USC, Oregon, Oregon St., Washington, UCLA, and Stanford. True, there are an equal amount of teams appearing in the BCS, but the SEC has had better quality among the quantity. You take away USC from the Pac-10 and there goes 5 of those apperances. Not saying much for the rest of the conference. Three of those SEC teams have been in the National Championship. Only one Pac-10 team has been in. And once again, the SEC has 9 wins in the BCS. The Pac-10, 7. The numbers don't lie.
So please, next time before you start reeling off answers and insults, check your sources first.
All from an "inbred from the south". Ouch.

This answer is to retort specifically to Jason G's rattling off of those exciting big 12 rivalries (ooooh Kansas and Kansas state OMG).
Tennessee and Alabama. Tennessee and Florida. Florida and Georgia. Auburn and Alabama. And just to give you one that approaches the crappiness of most of your Big 12 rivalries...Ole Miss and Miss. State.
The SEC *is* College Football. Period. Anyone who might suggest the ACC is on par is insane. Take your best team from the ACC and they'll be middle of the road in the SEC. I don't care if it's BC or Miami or Clemson. Middle of the gotdang road.

Last year it was the SEC, but the Big 12, even though underrated, has been very powerful in previous years. Last year was not a good year at all for the majority of the Big 12.
