Depends on your idea of a "low' budget. You can get a decent used BMW for $10K. If you know how to work on cars, you can get a classic corvette for under $10k (but you'll have to keep up w/ the maintenance). Some people's idea of low budget is less than $1500, others is less than $20k. Sorry, but can't be too specific w/o a price range.

The two most important factors to consider when putting a very young driver in a vehicle is (1) you want it to be a solid car with good safety features. 16-year-olds wreck cars. You want to buy a car that is more likely to protect your child in the event he / she wrecks. (2) Reliability - you want a vehicle that won't break down and leave your child stranded somewhere. For these reasons, I've always recommended parents buy 6-cylinder family sedans for their children. 4-cylinders are often too light and fragile to sustain crashes. As for reliability, its been my experience that Hondas, Toyotas and Nissans outdo American models. Put your kid in a late model Honda Accord, Nissan Maxima, or Toyota Camry.

If you have to amaze them with something you're going to write off at some point anyway, then I wouldn't count them as friends.
Go cheap and cheerful. My 1988 peugeot 205 (1900cc diesel) cost me £300 (~$600) and has only cost me about £80 tops to keep it roadworthy and happy in the 3yrs that I've owned it.
And she goes some and all!

I really really think that Scion xB's are sexy (and cheap). I love them. I want one SO bad. They'd be good for a 16 year old (i'm 16, so it's perfect, right? haha) but I like driving the Chevy Cobalts. They are compact, yet roomy, they are nice, and simple. Oh, and they are totally cute, which, I'm sure you don't care about, but it's a bonus! ;]

i know you want to impress your friends, but there is a price to that. sure a nice car is more money then a crappy one, but its also more money when you wreck it. which your more then likly going to do. so i say buy a pile of crap, get some money saved up, and in the mean time get some driving experiance, so when you get a nice car to impress your friends, you wont wreck it. wrecked cars arn't too impressive.
