If it is due to yeast then none of the regular diaper rash creams will work no matter what kind you use. My son had this problem, as do a lot of boys. His was only bad when he would have a bowel movement. You need a prescription for Clotrimazole and Betamethasone Dipropionate Cream. This stuff will clear it up and when you are putting him down for a nap or know that he may be in a diaper for long period of time where you cannot change him use a regualr diaper cream with Zinc Oxide in it to help form a protective barrier from moisture, but in order to start to clear up the rash you will need a prescription. Even if you can get it to start to clear up with regular diaper cream it will worsen as soon as he has a bowel movement.

IF ITS NOT A YEAST INFECTION THEN THERE IS A CREAM SOLD BEHIND THE PHARMACY COUNTER CALLED PINK SAVE
YOU HAVE TO ASK FOR IT, AS IT CONTAINS A HIGHER AMOUNT OF ZINC OXIDE THEN STORE BRANDS.

THIS IS WHAT THEY USED ON MY SON IN TH HOSP HE HAD ROTO VIRUS WHICH CREATED TERRIBLE DIAPER RASH.

DON'T USE WIPES ONLY CLEAN WATER AND A WASH CLOTH.
I HOPE THIS HELPS AND YOUR BABY FEELS MUCH BETTER.

Oddly enough, I always had several different brands of ointment on hand, because it seemed that sometimes one brand that had worked the time before wouldn't do the trick, but a different brand that might not have done anything before worked wonders. I usually used A&D (not the white creamy kind with the blue writing on the label, but the yellowish, clearish colored kind with the yellow/brown writing on the label) That brand consistenly worked very well for my son, however like I said, there were times that the A&D didn't work at all and another brand worked wonders. I only had luck with Desitin once, but also found that Bordeaux's Butt Paste worked great (Wal-Mart carries it) It's the messiest of all the brands very thick and not as easy to apply but it worked for some of his most stubborn diaper rashes. Another time, what I thought was just a bad diaper rash where NOTHING was doing the trick ended up being some form of yeast and I had to get a prescription cream from the pediatrician that cleared it up in about a day. I also used vaseline once with a lot of baby powder and that also worked. Basically, each time my son got a diaper rash I had to try different brands until I found one that worked, and then the next time, it was usually a different brand that worked, so I always kept at least 2-3 brands on hand but usually more.

It could be a yeast infection. (yes boys get them too.) A yeast infection in a baby looks like a very bad diaper rash, but one that can't be cured at home. You will need to see a doctor to be prescribed medication.

However, if it turns out to be a diaper rash only, I have found Vaseline to be very effective.

Try Johnson's Diaper Cream. It worked for my babies better than Desitin or Balmex. I would suggest taking him to the doctor. He may need a prescription if the rash is pimply. They would probably give him some Nystatin which will clear it up. Maybe try switching diapers. Mine could only use Pampers...all the other diapers gave rashes. Also don't use wipes when cleaning his bottom for a while. I know it is nasty, but it is best to use a washcloth with just water. Don't soak him for too long in the bath until it clears either.

I pity you, for I know exactly what you are feeling. I always used A&D ointment too, because the regular diaper ointment's burnt my daughter's skin.
However, at her last diaper rash that wouldn't go away, I took her in to her pediatrician and she diagnosed her with a yeast infection! It was caused by some antibiotics she had recently taken! I was shocked. The treatment was simple, just rub Monistat cream on her every time I changed her. A few days later, she was fine.
You could also try giving him a bath in Baking Soda Water. I would just dump some into her water and let her play in there for 30 minutes. It relieved some of the redness and blistered spots.
Cut out fruit juices, becuase they make stool more acidic.
You son may be teething, diaper rash is common when they get new teeth.
Hope he feels better SOON!!!!

Try the Balmex or Budreaux's Butt Paste. I use both when we have a flare up and they work great. Make sure you let the skin dry really good from the wipes before you put the diaper rash ointment on!

Call the pediatrician in the meantime and see what tey recommend!

Get a bowl of lukewarm water and a wash cloth at every diaper change and clean his bottom with mild baby wash. Pat dry or let air dry COMPLETELY. Follow up with a good diaper rash creme. I feel for you and your baby. Hopefully it will start to get better in a couple of days.

I really hope this helps.

Have you tried changing the brand of diaper you are using right now? Also Boudreaux's buttpaste is great.. but if they are extreme rashes.. my doctor gave a list of things to make a creme.. corn starch, yeast infection medicine, A&D, and another diaper creme with zinc. mix equal parts of it together and til it is thick and apply it with each change. This worked wonders on my son when he had really bad rashes. Good luck.

Ointments don't heal as well as creams do... you're basically putting petroleum jelly on a wound and preventing air from getting to the area and aiding in healing. Creams get absorbed into the skin, helping it to heal and soothing irritation. Whenever my son got rash, I'd use Desitin Creamy and the redness would be gone in a few hours; he never got severe diaper rash, though. I have friends who swear by Welenda Calendula Diaper Rash cream, but that can get very pricey. You can find other calendula-based creams in health food stores (ask for the baby section); they tend to range from $8 to $15, depending on size and brand.

Short of that, changing diet (could be an allergy), changing diapers (could be a reaction), and using wipes for sensitive skin or washcloths and water are some other things you can do. Good luck; if it doesn't clear up, you should take him to a doctor.
