problem is the @ key is where number 2 is and the " is where the @ key should be! and i cant find the british pound sign-- cos its supposed to be above the 3 but when i so shift and press it i get --->#

help!

It thinks that it is in US mode, the long way is to go into "My Computer" - "Control Panel" and "Regional Settings", change the keyboard setting back to "English UK".
There is a shortcut which usually works
Press Left-Arrow, + Alt, + Shift at the same time - each time you do this, it cycles through your available keyboards, try it once - it should work first time.

Change the regional settings to UK from US it seems your keyboard layout is set to US... Just to control panel then regional settings...select the region as UK and then go to lanugage options there remove any US keyboard layout...
