The P4 will rape the Celeron several times over.

When comparing Celeron to an actual Pentium CPU, its like comparing no-name brand of Ur foods.. the celeron is not to quality or speed of the Pentium even though there both made by Intel the celeron is basically a bargain chip.. Plus their will not be as much Front Side Bus speed or L2 cashe on the celeron as there is stander on the Pentiums!

For simple tasks you may not notice a difference, however, when it comes to multimedia, gaming & multitasking the Celeron pales in comparison to the P4....absolutely no contest.

Many people misinterpret the real performance value of internal clock speed when it comes to CPUs.
They assume that since it runs at a higher speed it will surely perform tasks more quickly .... not necessarily so.
This rule applies only to the lesser CPU intensive applications.

For example ... (I've used this analogy here before) let's say you work delivering pizza & have to get 5000 pizzas to a large party accross town.

You can use a Honda Civic that runs at 100mph or you can use a flatbed truck that runs at 50mph...
...although the truck is slower it will do the job more quickly because it only needs to make one trip.
- get the picture ?

The P4 can process a lot more data in a single clock cycle than the Celeron .. its internal reisters are larger as is its onboard cache.

Celerons are popular with businesses because they are single task oriented.
For a home user I would never recommend a Celeron....it will do the job, of course, but not near as well as the P4.

The core CPU and L1 cache are identical on Celerons and P4s but, depending on model, the P4 is likely to have a larger L2 cache and faster memory bus. The latest P4/Celeron CPU has different performance characteristics to earlier ones, confusing the issue.

Bottom line is that 2.7 GHz Celeron will be faster than 2.4 GHz P4 on some things and slower than others.

I would have to go for the 2.4 ghz P4.

The extra cache memory and the hyperthreading will more than make up for the 300Mhz speed difference.

Here is a link to a site that has a good chart showing you CPU performance on several different programs. Unfortunately, it does not include the Celeron processors in the charts.

Go for the p4, celeron was created as an "economy" chip and although the celeron is slightly higher rated in the example you gave, the p4 will give much better performance and add to your all round computing experience.

Pentium

pentium 4 is the better one.

when the pentium processor was first made loads where failed f but a few that failed worked still but where missing stuff. Intel then sold these failed processor as celerons.

Celerons have a same processing speed but are slower compared to the pentiums.

The Pentium by a landslide. Celerons have half as much cache RAM and run very poorly.

p4 2.4ghz will out perform the celeron any day of the week....a celeron is a basic cpu compared to a p4
