It is my favourite place on this planet. obviously it helps if the band you are going to see is any good. my advice is to get down the front and enjoy. head towards the right hand side of the stage though as this is where the female toilets are

Just about the best music venue in London, IMO. The atmosphere inside is great, more like a club really. I suppose it's helped by the fact that the bands that play, by the nature of the venue, tend to be pretty cool anyway; I think it exceedingly unlikely that "Take That" will ever play the Academy! Drinks are a little pricey, but I would recommend sticking to water anyway; at the Levellers gig in '97 I lost a few pounds in weight, due to over energetic dancing!!!
The comments about the area are a little overdone. Yes, you do have to keep your wits about you, to an extent, but then that is true of any major venue or club in London. I've had less problems at the Academy than (for example) Wembley, partly due I guess to the fact that Brixton's Police Station is virtually opposite it.
Enjoy!! :-))

The Carling Academy in Brixton is awesome.
Brixton, the place itself, is horrible.
The Academy is easily one of the most favourite music venues of music loving Londinites and is really cool. It wins awards and stuff in polls and things like that.
However, Brixton's a craphole. Beware of the many many many people trying to get you to convince you into getting in their unlicensed minicab and trying to steal your money, and the really annoying man playing the harmonica after you've spent all night at the academy and it's 5 in the morning and the trains haven't started yet and there's just this beeping and everybody's in a grumpy mood but the homeless guy is just annoying everyone and if he's not careful somebody WILL shoot him. (Brixton is notorious for its gun crime)
When going to the academy, keep your wits about you, and it'll be awesome. It really helps if you like the band you're seeing because the enthusiasm and motivation of seeing them and making friends with people also going to see them on your journey there on the train will see you plowing through the dangers like... like a bullet through the windscreen. Nah, that was a rubbish analogy. sorry. the academy's awesome. but the drinks are a bit overpriced.

i like it... it's a good size, and has a sloped floor so you can see really well even if you're at the back. it looks all fancy too! but i don't really like leaving after and walking through brixton. have been followed to the tube before, and that wasn't nice.

its allways been a good place whenever ive been gigs there, because the standing area raises up the further it goes back so everyone gets a good view and the acoustics for loud music are really good, theres no trouble getting bootleg stuff outside from dodgy traders too, my only advice is be careful getting in a unlicenced cab afterwards because you will get about a dozen cab drivers doing your head in for a fare.

I think it depends on who or what you are going to see. If it is crime you are reffering to then it can happen anywhere.
