It depends on the model. Some HD satellite boxes with terrestrial ATSC tuners in them will operate in terrestrial only mode without a satellite subscription. Many Voom boxes are like this, although not all of them. A couple of DirecTV examples would be the RCA DTC100 and the Samsung SIR-TS160, although you need an access card in the Samsung (it doesn't have to be activated or anything) in order to turn the terrestrial only mode on in the menu. Wal-Mart HAD an ATSC STB but it went discontinued 2 years ago as part of the USDTV pay service bankruptcy. I'm sure they'll stock another eventually, but I don't see one there to date.

Hi partblue32,

No your old satellite box will not work but you can but a digital to analog converter for $19.95 at Walmart.
