I want to use it for entertainment and internet browsing. I might do some video editing, but probably nothing more than half an hour at a time.

Which type should I buy?

It depends, are you a college student who dorms or are you working from home? If you dorm I'll advice you to get the laptop because its easy to carry around and wont bump around the trunk of your car or get the screen cracked if its in transit. If you work at home I would advice you to get a desktop, they are cheaper and more durable than laptops, most importantly its easier to upgrade desktops than laptops, you can only upgrade hard drives and memory in laptops. You say you want to do some video editing, that requires a powerful video card with desktops you can always change your video cards (As long as the motherboards support the card), you can't change the graphics card on a laptop because it is integrated into the motherboard. Personaly I would get a desktop (I have both) I like the fact that over time I can upgrade it ( I"m thinking of getting a new graphics card and 4gb or ram) something I can't do with my laptop.

Desktop. Desktops seem to be a little more reliable. The Internet connection will be somewhat faster. Plus you have a mouse. For gaming and recording and stuff a desktop would be better. I say get a desktop and THEN buy a laptop for anyone. Laptops are for if you travel. If you travel around the world and have important comp work get a laptop.

are you transporting it anywhere, if not Desktop. Laptops, what you pay for is typically what you get, not easy to update. Video editing can make uses of the Desktops larger memory and hard drive as well as faster cpu and better graphics. Also for the same price you get a more powerful descktop then you would a laptop.

Save yourself! First of all, the laptop will give you a capability to use the resources much more effectively. The most obvious and the most significant thing at the portative computer usage is a time economy, but it is not the only plus. Laptop purchase enables to save a place in a appartment and office, your nerves and many other things.

Unless you plan to take your computer with you or plan to move it around a lot, I would say that you should get a desktop. For one, it will offer more power for less money than a laptop. Also, it is easier to upgrade components in the future, especially if you want to add in larger hard drives, or a better video card...

I guess a laptop would be better. Unless you count Games in Entertainment, it'll be pretty fine.
Laptops do support games, but they'd cost you fine amount of money.
I'd suggest HP Laptop.

You should have elaborated on what "entertainment" you want to use, games like Call of Duty or just like The Incredible Machine?

Or just watch DVDs?

Laptop is a good bet without knowing in detail what entertainment is to you.

Well, it depends on exactly what you're planning to use it for.

Desktop PCs often have more capabilities, though it's best if you build them yourself. Generally though, they also tend to be more expensive and require more mantaining due to the large amount of hardware involved.

Laptops generally are more portable, though their batteries tend to only last for a couple hours at a time, depending on the battery. The hard drive also has a shorter life, it seems, than a standard PC.

Edit: as a response to the above, AVOID EMACHINES AND DELL!!!! Cheapest pieces of C-R-A-P on the market... I know from experience.

It really depends for me I'm a gamer and all the lap tops won't play any of the games (new or old). If your get ing it for general web access I'd go with a lap top.

If you haven't bought one yet. I would be looking for a used with windows xp as I have heard nothing but complaints about windows vista. Some glad I bought mine 2years ago. Lap top takes up so much less room
