I bought a $40 SIM and Nokia 1600 on my last trip, including a few hundred minutes of credit. About £20, so good value. Got it from Walmart there (they own Asda).

My experience is that you get a much better deal when there, than if trying to sort it out before you leave. You need to check coverage of the various networks too, to ensure that you'll get service where you want. If roaming with a UK sim card, you can choose from the many networks.

Also, you need to use a phone set for the correct frequencies for the US networks - there are several types in use there. You could perhaps buy over the internet and have it in your hotel waiting for you, when you land. You'd need to check with them first, of course, to see if they hold parcels for guests who haven't arrived.

I've added a link to a similar deal below, $39.98 Nokia 1600 and 300 minutes. 10 cents a minute - about 5p!

Good luck! Rob

Might be better waiting till you arrive in the u.s. i'm sure Cingular, verizon do payg simcards, probably be cheaper too.
