The first motel in the world is located in San Luis Obispo, California. Construction started in 1925 at a cost of $80,000. The word 'motel' meaning motor hotel was coined by architect Arthur Heinemen and the first property was named Milestone.
The motel is situated halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. For $1.25 a night, guests were issued a two-room bungalow with a kitchen and a private adjoining garage. All the units faced a central courtyard, which housed the swimming pool and included picnic tables for social gatherings.

Gee I don't know.. but since travelling is a very ancient thing, I would say it existed for quite a long time. Its name was not a motel ofcourse, they were places where travellers would pay for food and bed. But If you are asking the first place that had the name 'motel' keep on looking for answers..
