Energy, derived from our nutrition, is converted into ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) which is an energy "battery" in our cells. This ATP activates different types of biochemical reactions which are needed by our body to perform activities (like movement of muscles) or to build up complicated biomolecules from simple precursors in our anabolic metabolism.

Equilibrium is reached when an organism dies. To keep a system not at equilibrium requires energy. Energy is needed for most processes in the body. Here a just a few specific processes that require energy:

Elimination of waste via peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract.
Movement of blood via pumping of the cardiac muscle.
Movement of appendages via contraction of skeletal muscle.
Maintenance of temperature via shivering.
Maintenance of blood pressure via contraction of smooth muscle in the vasculature.
Thinking via neuron maintenance of electrochemical gradient.

You need energy for metabolism, your cells don't exactly need energy, they need oxygen to create energy. Of course, they take some of that energy that they created for themselves to stay alive. That is why we breath, to get O2 to our cells so our cells can produce energy.

the cells help our bodies to function and work. to do this, they need ENERGY, or in other words, they need to respire. muscle cells need energy to move, so we can tense our muscles when walking or whatever.
