I want to plan something special for her. I am just not sure whether to have a big suprise party in our back yard with lots of friends and family, or whetther to keep it intimate. Her family has been bugging me to plan something. Give me some good ideas.

This is definitely a "big surprise party with everyone she knows" kind of event.

I did something like this for my hubby on his 30th. But because he likes trains so much I held it at the Train Museum in their Depot. Whatever you do, find a way to make it all about her and a celebration of what she's done with her life so far and how you all have been changed for the positive by knowing her. You could always create a Trivia game in which the questions are all about her. The person who knows her best gets a prize and gets to sit by her at dinner... just a thought

If you think she'd like to have a party, plan a surprise party for her with family and friends and your present for her can be a gift certificate to a spa or something like jewelry! Or you can keep it intimate by going away for the weekend just the two of you. Decide on which one is more doable for you and go from there. I'm sure she'll appreicate it either way!

Most people I know, even though 40 is "scary", appreciate a big deal being made on their 40th b-day. What does she like? Does she love shows or sports? You can rent a party bus and gather friends who will pitch in and all go somewhere fun where she would enjoy. A surprise party is something that will make her feel special too.

Every year I call my wifes friends and arrange for her to have a night out with her friends, and I give them money and say have a good time. That way she has no kids, no house, no nothing to take care of during the night.

How does she feel about turning 40??? If she is mad about it I would keep it between you too. If not throw a big party invite everyone...Make sure there is 40 of everything..and hopefully she will notice the detail you took...
