Actually some charities might help pay or the families themselves will have to pay.

I believe it varies depending on where the rescue occurs, and what agency is involved in the rescue.
Here's an interesting story on the subject.
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/02/19/hood.rescue/index.html
There is something called "rescue insurance" which climbers can purchase to cover the expense of such things. In fact on some expeditions, it is required. If the climbers were never called upon to pay the expenses themselves, there would be no market for such insurance, so apparently sometimes, they ARE billed for the costs.

There should be a duty to have a club in case you climb and then at the same time as this happens the club will pay, if someone would not connect and bypass's out on my own then do reformatory time, no reason we ought to always all pay for the activity...

well the people who go and search for them are police officers and the police department for funded by the city so the people of the city pay for the police officers to search for the climbers. The property taxes you pay goes to the city which in turn pays all the city workers for doing their job.

I wish they had to pay for it--this WOULD be a case where penalty could result in deterrence.
Mostly, though, it's our tax dollars that go to protect and rescue weekend-warrior hotshots or big-ego stuntmeisters who get themselves in a pickle out there somewhere.

Life is precious. No matter what it costs, a child should be found. Are you aware that 38,490 children are missing since last January 1st, right here in America?
If we don't look for them, what will other nations think of us?
What if a molester finds them before we do? What if a rat, squirrel or mountain lion gets to them before the rescue teams?
Are you actually saying that you think they should just be left to shivver in the cold, without food, TV and candy?
I don't hope someday you are lost, and in need of rescue.
Ohhh you make me so angry. I was all feeling good today, then I read your stupid post.
How dare you place money above a child?
You probably drive your kids in an American car...right?

It is county specific in Colorado.
Some of the counties have had too many idiots, and realize that they should charge for search & rescue operations. However, to suppliment this, there are many volunteer groups who assist for free.

It's generally our tax dollars.
It should be emphasized with each climber who courts death to climb at their own risk.

I don't know who does, but it should be their responsibility. They're the idiots who went up there, not us other poor taxpayers.
