The noise just started two days ago. It's continuous and faint, like a very high pitched buzz. It wasn't there before. It sounds like its coming from behind a wall where there are pipes. If you put your ear up to the wall, you can hear it clearly as well as the sound of water going through pipes. I live in an old, pre-war apt. building in NYC.

It might just be the water traveling through the pipes. Or, it might be a small leak. Have you noticed any water stains or moisture where there shouldn't be? I don't know who to call in NYC - a building manager? superintendent? landlord? I would definitely call them before opening the wall to find the cause.
