i have a pretty complex problem so please bare with me. i'm 17 years old and i got my first period when i was 12. i have NEVER had regular periods every month. i basically get my period once a year. i experience spotting every now and then but only get my period once a year. i have spoken to doctors about this and they have never mentioned pcos and never seemed to be concerned about a serious problem. i am not over weight. i am however anemic. could this be related in any way? is there any way i can try to jumpstart my periods? thank you so much.

also.. do you think this will have an affect on my fertility? i want to be a mother.

i used to have very infrequent periods when I was your age and my doctor recommended birth control pills. I started using them and I get a regular period every month. Talk to your gyno about getting on birth control.

Its the only thing that helped me!

If you are anemic that could be the problem or you are not eating good enough. Another reason is that there can be problems with your hormones. I know what you are going through, I didn't have my period in two full years. The doctor sent me to see an endocrinology or something like that to see what could be the problem. I had a lot of blood draws to see what was the problem and the doctor told me that my hormones weren't functioning good but that is not a big problem. You might get birth control pills but the problem is that some girls gain weight when they are taking it and some lose weight but the most important thing is that you get your period back.

I really think you have PCOS. I had the same problem when I was younger but the Doctors were NEVER honest with me and always told me that NOTHING was wrong!

LIES LIES LIES!

I had to wait until I was 24 for a GYN to FINALLY tell me that I have PCOS! I could have started getting treated a LONG time ago but NO.

I would get a second opinion if I were you.

Yea, the pills may work but once you get off, you'll go back to have a period once a year. If you plan on having kids in the future, you need to address the issue now.

my friend had the same problem just she didnt have a period for about 8 months, she went to see a doctor and he gave her some tablets to bring the cycle back to normal and he put her on the pill. now shes fine and has regular periods. i don't think it will be anything to worry about. just see a doctor, maybe?

it could be related to your being anemic. talk to your doctor again and make sure you press the issue until they take you seriously. chances are you're fine. sometimes doctors will prescribe a low estrogen birth control pill for regulating your cycle, but find a doctor who will listen, maybe try planned parenthood, they're really good there and will listen to your concerns and answer your questions. good luck!

Im not a professional, but this might affect your fertility, but as for now i wouldnt worry about it! PERIODS SUCK!! But like everyone else said, go to a doctor who understands that you are serious about finding out what is wrong!

I had a similiar problem when I was younger, although I couldn't start my period. I developed very late in general, but my parents bought me this liquid made by Lydia Pinkham. They sell them in tablets as well, but that helped me a lot when I was having trouble. I've linked a website for you, but you can't open it, then search Lydia Pinkham products.

Good luck.
