I am going to be a high school grad in June. I would like to pursue pharmacy and there are openings at my local hospital for pharmacy tech which I would probably work over the summer. What exactly is per diem? Do you still get fully trained and everything? Do you know when youre on call or is it all the time? Any help is appreciated.

Per Diem literally means "Per Day". The hospital has a set amount of money that you can earn per day. You should get trained though, but you might not get as much training as a full time permanent employee would. And they should let you know in advance when you are scheduled to work. You would have to ask them about it more.

Whether you can be a pharmacy technician without formal training is determined by the state that you live in. Most pharmacy technicians have an Associate's degree.

You can always call the Human Resources department of that hospital to ask them about the educational requirements of the position.

Per diem is a type of shift that does not have a set schedule. You would arrange your hours with the department supervisor on an as needed basis. They would let you know what their on call policy is.

If you cannot get paid employment in the hospital pharmacy, look into volunteering. It would give you exposure to the field.

You will have to go to school to become a pharmacy tech, but it is a pretty short process. Per diem jobs are paid by the day, but you should be careful, because they most likely are not necessarily a full-time position and more than likely are a contract position. You will not get any benefits for that position.
