How do you clean the black tarnish (if thats what it is) off silver and gold costume jewellery? Is there a household remedy i can use instead of buying cleaner?

Try plain toothpaste and a really soft toothbrush. That should take it off.
To avoid getting it on costume jewery, try coating it with a thin layer of clear nail polish. I do this all the time with my really cheap stuff that looks expensive. It works wonders.

Try boiling a pan of water with some washing-up liquid in it, then leave them to simmer for a while. Be careful though, It can be disastrous if you "Over Cook" them! i I used this method to clean my REAL Tiffany and co necklace, forgot about it, and came back to find the water all evaporated, and my poor necklace burnt to a black crisp in the bottom! I had to spend about 5 hours scrubbing it, and it's never quite regained its shine...
I have tried it with much success though, and it works a treat to get rid of black marks. I'm not entirely sure if it'll work with costume jewellery though, anyone else know?

if its a black build up and not tarnish...soak it in warm soapy water...then after half an hour...give it a soft brush with an old toothbrush and rinse in cold water - that should do the trick.

You can let your jewelery soak in vinegar to get that tarnish look.
