It may be varnished - get this off and plant it in the ground for a month or two. You will be amazed how antique it will then look. In the meantime open your door with a screwdriver

Antique hardware companies sell darkening solution on-line. Couple of these sites are listed below.
It is also important to know if the new hardware has a protective finish on it to prevent tarnishing. If so, the finish will have to be removed before using this product. You can soak it in lacquer thinner for about an hour and then use steel wool to remove any removing finish.

new brass fittings will come with a coat of clear lacquer. you will need to remove this first with nitromors or similar. Then it can age naturally or you could try wetting it then warming it in the oven this may speed the process of oxidation.
