How is band used in this sentence?
Even though the darkening skies threatened rain, the band decided to play.
Is it subject, verb, direct object or object of a preposition

The comma in this sentence is used as (what is known from diagramming sentences - a VERY old practice) what is known as a "reversing conjunction".

This is a conjunction, which when removed, will cause the sentence to make sense grammatically if the two clauses joined by it are put in reverse order.

I know that sounds convoluted, but here is how it works with your sentence:

Even though the darkening skies threatened rain, the band decided to play.

If you remove the comma (a conjunction), and put the two clauses it joins in reverse order, you will get the following sentence:

The band decided to play even though the darkening skies threatened rain.

Now, it is easy to see that the word "band" is the SUBJECT of this sentence.

It's the subject--your main clause is "the band (subject)decided (verb) to play (infinitive used as direct object)" The "even though..." clause is dependent on your main clause, and has no bearing on how band is used.

"Band" is the subject of the sentence, i.e. the subject of the independent clause "the band decided to play". "Even though . . . rain" is an introductory dependent clause.

a direct object.

the aritcle 'the' rules out verb (you cant band), theres no preposition.

it could be the subject, but the subject is probably skies.

its the direct object becuase it answers WHO decided?-the band decided.
