You might want to try "The Monk" (1796) by Matthew Lewis. One of the greatest, darkest, craziest Gothic horror novels of all time. It's still shocking, even by today's standards.

From the Penguin Classics description:

"Savaged by critics for its blasphemy and obscenity, The Monk shows the diabolical decline of Ambrosio, a worthy Capuchin superior who is tempted by Matilda -- a young girl who has entered his monastery disguised as a boy -- and eventually succumbs to magic, murder, incest, and torture. A brilliant examination of violent and erotic impulses, The Monk was greatly admired by the Marquis de Sade, as well as Byron, Poe, Flaubert, Hawthorne, and Emily Bronte."

Okay... No supernatural elements to a gothic novel. Lol thats easier said than done. Try reading some Edgar Allan Poe. While his stuff might seem supernatural on a surface level its really all very deeply psychological. "The Pit and the Pengalum" or "The masque of the Red Death" are good gothic stories. You can probably find them online if you look.

Well the first Gothic novel ever was called The Castle of Otrato by Horace Walpole. It is absolutely hilarious even though I imagine it was scary at the time. From there you can go through Frankenstein and Dracula all the way up to a contemporary Gothic novel - Beloved by Toni Morrison. All wonderful books. Pax - C.
