Has anyone ever traveled on Amtrak from the east coast to the west coast?
I will be traveling with 2 children (2 & 5). Any advice or suggestions to make the trip go smoothly? Also, i noticed it gets to one destination and there is a huge layover until the next train leaves. Will i have to sit at the station and wait the whole time until my next departure? Please help!

Where is the layover?

As an example-

Amtrack usually has layovers in Chicago. If you are traveling in a sleeping car you have access to the VIP lounge where you can leave your bags, and enjoy complimentary snacks and such. That particular station is very close to Navy Pier and my layovers are really enjoyable.

When are you traveling? They show movies the kids can enjoy during the day in the entertainment lounges of the train. During the summer, they have tour guides in the observation lounges.

If you are traveling coach you will want to bring extra things not needed if you are in a sleeping car.

Some people might need earplugs. Personally, the sound of the train didn't bother me or my companion.

If you can provide some more details I might be able to give you some more information that might be of help to you.

It only stops for a minute so you better be there when it does get there. It is really fast and noisy so you should here it. Try the coaster. It waits there for a minute and a half but its more enviormentally safe.
