Flour or Grain Mites are an increasing problem. The following good practice helps avoid them:
1. Look closely at dry goods before purchase or before you put them away in your cupboards.
2. Dry goods, especially those sold in paper packaging, should be transferred to airtight containers for storage. Be sure not to mix new supplies with old, and wash the container before refilling.
3. Keep the kitchen and food storage cupboards well ventilated and dry.
4. Check food cupboards regularly, using contents in 'best before' date order.
5. If you don't use items very quickly, always buy the smallest size. When you transfer them to a container, keep a small notepad in the cupboard, so that you can jot down the item and its 'use-by date'. (Time can pass quicker than we think!).
What about the shop? - If you are certain you can identify a problem with a particular shop, for example if you find mites as you are buying products or unpacking them at home, contact the food hygiene department at your local council office.

Wrong category, but will answer the question anyway. Place flower in a large plastic container with an air tight lid. Place a bay leaf, which you must have will assume you cook as well as bake, on the top of the flour. This will keep out the mites out of flour, rice, oats and it even works with bird seed and does not change the taste in any of the foods, not sure about the bird seed but the bird doesn't complain, try this it really works.....good luck.......P.S. not sure where you live but bug bombs are illegal in Canada because of the harm they do to your lungs and pets if you are not out of the house for the required time, think about this before trying it sssshhh

First, empty and clean your cupboards. Toss all dry goods, including any kind of pasta, rice etc. When you buy new, try to keep it in Tupperware or freezer bags. Always add a bay leaf or two to any bag or Tupperware. Then scatter a few around the shelves. If you know where to find a bay tree it would make a considerable difference in the freshness of the leaves. It would be a good idea to clean all of your cupboards at the same time. The little buggers get around. Once or twice a year replace the leaves. The bugs have a real aversion to bay leaf.

You'll need to throw away all the dry food in your cupboard you keep the flour in. Only food in air- tight containers and cans will be safe. Give your cupboard a good clean and next time to buy flour keep it in an air-tight container (Tupperware or similar). Flour weavels are so tiny they can and do contaminate all similar products!

Good luck!

How long do you keep it for, it don't have a long shelf life. And it needs to be put into an airtight container, with a tight lid.I would throw mine away after a month, no longer. It's not expensive, and it's FLOUR.

I've heard that bay leaf will make them leave and keep your flour clean of bugs. I have used it for years. Just put 3 or 4 dried bay leaves in your flour.
