all somatic cells undergo mitosis, where one diploid cell is divided into two diploid cells. This is how our skin is replaced, our hair grows, etc. Germ cells undergo two meiotic divisions to create four haploid sperm or egg cells. However, in the female these are uneven divisions, and three of the resultant cells have very little cytoplasm and organelles, and are called Barr bodies.

mitosis occurs when a animal cell duplicates into two sister cells. meiosis is a related occurance which happens in germ cells( such as sperm and ova) .

mitosis is DNA replication for somatic cells and it is part of asexual reproduction and it is used by humans for growth and development
Meiosis is DNA replication from germline cells and it is part of sexual reproduction and is used by humans for creation of offspring
